The original designer dog still needs the exercise routine of a working Labrador
Exercise

Intensity
high
Weight
30โ65 lbs
Lifespan
12โ15 years
Labradoodles were first bred in the 1980s as hypoallergenic guide dogs, and they've kept the Lab's work ethic and the Poodle's smarts. They're athletic, trainable, and genuinely need a job โ or at least a long daily walk โ to stay balanced. Without enough exercise, they become anxious and destructive.
2 walks per day, 30โ40 minutes each, plus mental stimulation
Labradoodles inherit the Lab's retrieving drive and the Poodle's need for mental engagement. Plain walks aren't enough โ mix in training, nose work, or fetch to tire them out properly. They're excellent hiking and swimming companions.
2 meals per day
Like their Lab parent, Labradoodles can be food-motivated and prone to overeating. Consistent portion tracking matters, especially if you're also giving training treats throughout the day.
Brushing every 2โ3 days, professional grooming every 6โ8 weeks
Coat type varies hugely โ wool, fleece, or hair โ and each needs different care. Regardless of type, regular brushing prevents matting. Check ears weekly since floppy ears trap moisture after water play.
Recommended vet schedule: Annual exam, hip evaluation recommended at age 2
Three features that matter most for this breed:
Set a 60-minute minimum so your Labradoodle's Lab-level energy actually gets burned off
Track training sessions alongside walks โ Labradoodles need mental exercise as much as physical
Keep training treats in check alongside regular meals to prevent the Lab-side weight gain
